I knew all along well before I was pregnant that when the time came, I would opt for cloth diapers. There are more and more companies popping up in the Greater Vancouver area that provide cloth diaper services. When I went to the Vancouver Baby Fair back in October, there was one company, Saucy Bottoms, with a table there. I spent quite a bit of time chatting with the owner about the pros/cons about cloth diapers and also inquiring about their services. I left feeling even MORE sure that I wanted a cloth diaper service for my baby.
Ed agreed too because of a number of reasons.
1. Our garbage pick up is once every OTHER week. Yes...and garbage only gets picked up here twice a month...if that. Over Christmas and New Years it was worse. Because of the holidays, the days got shuffled and we didn't have garbage picked up...well...let's just say our last pick up was a week before Christmas and our next pick up since then won't be until this coming Thursday....ya 3 weeks! And with the holidays we've had MORE garbage! So needless to say 2 weeks of diapers sitting in our garbage outside is NOT what we want. Saucy Bottoms picks up dirty/drops off clean diapers 2 times a WEEK!
2. Price. The cost of an average pack of diapers here is about what?....$30 for a pack of 24? With newborns especially, I have been told that I'll be changing diapers pretty much close to every hour. Can you imagine how much that would cost? It'd be in the HUNDREDS a week! With cloth diaper services, it's an average of $25 a week and you get UNLIMITED diapers. I like that you pay a flat rate and you get unlimited diapers. Keeps the funds way more manageable.
3. Eco-Friendly. Ed and I are not really exactly totally eco-friendly people. I mean we recycle what we can because we were raised that way but we're not tree-huggers. But the idea of reusing cloth diapers that get washed rather than using disposable plastic diapers that get tossed into the dumpster makes complete sense...especially if it's cheaper to do so!
4. Looks. Ed and I both agreed after seeing the diapers at the baby fair that they look way cuter than the disposable ones. There are all different types of fabrics, designs and colours that we can get them in! And since we know we're having a girl....we can get all the cute, fun, pretty ones!!!
We still haven't decided which cloth diaper service company to go with yet but Saucy Bottoms is one of them...so is Happy Nappy (a friend of mine who recently had a baby is using them). We'll decide soon and give either one of them a call!!! I'll blog about this topic again once I have things set up!!
doesn't garbage pick up 2 twice a month SUCK?!!!
ReplyDeleteIt totally does!!!!!!!!! Especially when we have tenants living downstairs...that's 2 families worth of garbage!!!!! Ed and I don't even have that much but there's 4 people downstairs!!
ReplyDeleteWe looked into Happy nappy when we were pregnant, but ultimately, for many reasons, decided to use disposables. I wish we had used cloth.
ReplyDeleteBUT... if you watch for sales, you can get 100+ diapers for $30. In 2 years, I have never paid full price for diapers, nor have I spent more than $50 a month on them. Which makes the cost of using a diaper service more than the cost of disposables.
There is the option of buying cloth diapers and washing them at home. There are many many many options out there, and I've heard for as little as $300, you can have diapers for birth-potty training.
clothdiaperfinder.com and clothdiaperwhisperer.com have LOTS of information.
Thanks for the links Ashley!! We need to decide what we are going to do for diapers fast! Thanks for blogging about this Daisy :)
ReplyDeleteno problem stacie! One of the reasons we didn't cloth diaper was that we didn't have enough information.... no one around us cloth diapered, or supported us doing it...but in 2.5 years, a lot has changed!
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome Stacie!! Ya a LOT of my new parent friends are using cloth!! It's just a lot better for the environment and on the wallet in the long run. Happy Nappy also guarantees that your baby will be diaper free by age 2.5 and if not any diapers needed after that point is free!! So really you're paying for 2.5 years MAX and research shows that babies who use cloth diapers get toilet trained earlier!!!
ReplyDeleteIf anyone is interested in Happy Nappy please refer me! They have a referral program!!! Thank you in advance!!!!
